President Ruto approves renaming of Talanta Stadium to Raila Odinga International Stadium, signalling national unity and honour

President William Ruto has approved the renaming of Talanta Stadium to Raila Odinga International Stadium, a move meant to honour the late former Prime Minister and acknowledge his longstanding impact on Kenya’s democratic journey.

The decision follows strong calls from Nairobi residents and leaders during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium, where Governor Johnson Sakaja publicly appealed to the President to consider the name change. Dr. Ruto assured the crowd that the government would adopt the new name once the 60,000-seater facility now in its final construction phase is completed in March 2026.

The President said the renaming reflects the government’s commitment to unity and recognition of national icons, noting that modern sporting infrastructure is central to youth empowerment under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. He emphasised that investment in sports, just like agriculture, offers pathways for growth, talent development, and community cohesion.

The formal renaming process will go through the required legal and administrative steps, including ministry reviews, Cabinet approval, public participation, and an official gazette notice. A ceremonial unveiling will follow during the stadium’s inauguration.

According to the government, the facility is envisioned as a major hub for international competitions, cultural events, and community activities cementing Raila Odinga’s legacy while expanding Kenya’s sports footprint.
