President Ruto Launches Lipa SHA Pole Pole to Boost Financial Inclusion in Kenya

Kenya’s informal sector plays a crucial role in the economy, yet many workers struggle with financial instability due to irregular income. To address this challenge, President William Ruto introduced Lipa SHA Pole Pole during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County. This flexible payment plan allows Kenyans to pay for essential services in manageable installments, easing financial pressure.

Speaking at the event, President Ruto emphasized the need for an inclusive financial solution tailored to informal sector workers. He declared, “To address persistent challenges such as irregular premium payments, especially among the informal sector, the government of Kenya is introducing an inclusive payment solution known as Lipa SHA Pole Pole”.

The initiative primarily targets Social Health Authority (SHA) insurance contributions, enabling Kenyans to pay their yearly premiums in installments rather than lump sums. This approach ensures continuous health coverage while promoting the sustainability of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

The payment system integrates with mobile money platforms like M-Pesa, allowing users to register easily and select flexible repayment schedules. Participants can pay monthly, weekly, or even daily, depending on their financial capacity.

Key features include:

Flexible installment options to match income flow.

No bank account or credit history required, ensuring accessibility.

Mobile money integration for seamless transactions.

Affordable rates to prevent financial strain.

Lipa SHA Pole Pole reduces financial stress, making healthcare, rent, education, and insurance more accessible. Informal workers avoid debt accumulation, increase savings, and gain financial stability.

Additionally, business owners can purchase equipment or stock without upfront costs, fostering economic growth. The initiative also strengthens financial inclusion, ensuring more Kenyans can access structured payment schemes.
