President Ruto rewards Kenyan athletes with Ksh27 million, promises housing support after Tokyo World Championships medal triumph

President William Ruto has announced that the government has disbursed Ksh27 million to reward Kenya’s medalists at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Speaking at State House on Thursday morning during a breakfast with the national athletics team, the President confirmed that gold medalists will each receive Ksh3 million, silver medalists Ksh2 million, and bronze medalists Ksh1 million.

“In recognition of your heroic efforts, a total of Ksh27 million has already been disbursed to the medalists. Ksh3 million for gold, Ksh2 million for silver, and Ksh1 million for bronze, in line with my directive,” Ruto said.

The Head of State also announced that the government will pay half the cost of affordable housing units for gold medalists, offering them the option of a soft loan for the balance.

“I want to confirm that just like we did for the Harambee Stars in CHAN, the seven gold medalists will also benefit the same way. The government will cover half the cost of the house you choose, and you can finance the rest, with access to a soft loan if needed,” he added.

Kenya’s athletics team finished second globally out of 194 countries, bagging a total of 11 medals, 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze. The United States topped the medal table with 26.

Among Kenya’s standout performers was Beatrice Chebet, who stormed to victory in both the 10,000m and 5,000m races. Other gold winners included Peres Jepchirchir, Faith Kipyegon, Faith Cherotich, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Lilian Odira.
