PS Carren Ageng’o urges youth to use NYOTA funds wisely as nationwide validation begins for Ksh50,000 business grants

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Children Services, CPA Carren Ageng’o, has urged young Kenyans benefiting from the government’s NYOTA program to use the funds responsibly and focus on building sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking during the NYOTA validation exercise at Moi Stadium in Kisumu, Ageng’o reminded over 1,500 youth present that the Sh50,000 grants are meant to serve as seed capital, not money for consumption.

“Let this money change your life by helping you start or grow a business. We want job creators, not job seekers,” she said.

The ongoing validation exercise, taking place across all 47 counties, aims to verify eligible applicants registered under the program. Each ward will select 70 youth through a transparent process based on merit and aptitude.

In Kisumu Central, 1,500 youth were shortlisted, with only 350 set to be absorbed after an online business-readiness test conducted via mobile phones.

Ageng’o noted that the government has ensured inclusivity in the program, with equal opportunities for both genders and provisions for persons with disabilities. Once the validation process ends, successful applicants will receive business and financial training before receiving their grants.

She cautioned youth against misusing the funds, stressing that NYOTA seeks to promote long-term financial empowerment, not short-term gains.

The PS also highlighted other government initiatives aimed at addressing youth unemployment, including internship placements, the Climate Works Program, and the Affordable Housing Project, which continues to employ thousands of youth in skilled and unskilled roles.

“Even if you’re not selected under NYOTA, remember there are other opportunities rolling out across the country,” she said, urging young people to remain hopeful and proactive.

Ageng’o reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making youth economically self-reliant through access to capital, mentorship, and skills development.

“The government believes in your potential. Take this opportunity seriously and let it mark the beginning of your success story,” she added.
