The government has launched the Ksh409.4 million Munyaka Area Last Mile Electrification Project in Kiambu County, targeting to connect over 2,100 households to the national power grid.
Energy Principal Secretary Alex Kamau Wachira, who presided over the flagging off of electrification materials, said the project represents the government’s continued commitment to delivering reliable and affordable energy to rural and peri-urban communities.
In the first phase, 379 new customers in the Munyaka area will be connected to electricity. The broader plan will see more households benefit as the rollout extends across the county.
“This project will open doors for economic growth, support local enterprises, and enhance access to essential services in schools and health centres,” said Wachira.
He added that improving electricity access remains central to the government’s plan to stimulate investment and uplift living standards, particularly in underserved areas.
The launch event was attended by several Kiambu leaders, including Thika Town MP Hon. Alice Ng’ang’a, Lari MP Hon. Joseph Mburu Kahangara, Gatundu South MP Hon. Gabriel Kagombe, Gatundu North MP Hon. Elijah Kururia, and Kabete MP Hon. James Wamacukuru.
Residents have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will not only light homes but also spark growth for small businesses and community services.
