Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has taken a major step toward reviving his political career after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) approved the registration of his new outfit, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP).
Sonko received the certificate on Tuesday morning at the ORPP headquarters in Westlands, Nairobi, accompanied by senior party officials and a group of supporters. The approval confirms that NEDP has met all legal and administrative requirements under the Political Parties Act, clearing the way for its participation in national politics.
Although widely viewed as the party’s de facto leader, Sonko is expected to be formally installed as NEDP’s leader early next year. The move comes five years after his impeachment as Nairobi Governor, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court and one that barred him from contesting for public office.
His ouster—linked to allegations of mismanagement and his fallout with powerful figures in the previous administration pushed Sonko into a quieter political phase. However, the registration of NEDP signals his intention to re-engage the political arena ahead of the 2027 General Election.
NEDP is among several new parties recently submitted for approval, including the People Centred Party (PEC) and the United Super Alliance Party (USAP). The ORPP has invited the public to present any objections regarding these parties within seven days.
