Rigathi Gachagua’s Exit from UDA: A Political Shift in Kenya

Rigathi Gachagua has officially left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), marking a major shift in Kenya’s political scene. His departure follows his impeachment and removal as Deputy Party Leader, which already severed his formal ties with UDA.

On May 12, 2025, Gachagua announced his resignation through a letter criticizing UDA. He accused the party of abandoning its promises of economic growth, justice, and unity. He claimed UDA had become a platform for policies that failed Kenyans.

“The party wasted an opportunity to transform Kenya politically, socially, and economically,” he wrote.

Gachagua also alleged that President William Ruto deceived Kenyans during his campaign. He argued that UDA’s promises of justice, peace, and prosperity were misleading. “We trusted him, but it was all a lie. No nation thrives on deception,” he stated. He described Kenya Kwanza as a coalition moving in “sinusoidal malignancy.”

Despite his claims, UDA dismissed his resignation. The party’s Secretary General, Hassan Omar, called it “null and void.” He argued Gachagua’s membership had already been revoked after his ouster. Omar labeled Gachagua as divisive and ineffective, adding that UDA had removed a “toxic, archaic, polarizing individual” for the sake of unity.

Gachagua’s departure signals his intent to take a new political path. He plans to launch his own party and position himself as a strong opposition leader ahead of the 2027 elections. His movement will challenge Ruto’s administration, especially in Mount Kenya, where he still holds influence.

Political experts believe Gachagua’s move will reshape alliances. His ability to rally Mount Kenya voters will determine whether his new party can challenge UDA. Some analysts say his exit highlights deeper conflicts in the ruling party, especially over resource allocation.

Gachagua has now joined forces with opposition figures. He is working alongside Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa, among others. These leaders aim to unite Kenyans against Kenya Kwanza and select a strong candidate to challenge Ruto in the 2027 elections.
