Road closures announced ahead of CHAN games in Nairobi this weekend

Nairobi motorists have been advised to brace for traffic disruptions this Sunday as key roads near Nyayo Stadium and Kasarani are closed for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches.

Nairobi Traffic Commander Joseph Chirchir said sections of Aerodrome Road, Lang’ata Road, and Mombasa Road will be partially shut to ease movement for fans attending the fixtures.

From Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout, Aerodrome Road will be closed, while one side of Lang’ata Road will be shut between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts. Motorists heading to the CBD via Lang’ata Road will be diverted to Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi roundabout.

On Mombasa Road, one side will be closed from Lusaka to Bunyala roundabout. Traffic from Mombasa Road into the CBD will instead use Likoni Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni Hotel.

Motorists from the CBD heading to Thika, Juja, and Ruiru are advised to use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road. Those coming from Thika Road into the CBD should take the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.

Matatus ferrying fans to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani will be diverted through Ruaraka Baba-Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road to Ngomongo roundabout.

“Avoid Thika Road unless going to Kasarani Stadium,” Chirchir warned.

The CHAN Group A fixtures will see Harambee Stars face Morocco at 3pm in Kasarani, while Zambia meets Angola at Nyayo Stadium at 6pm.

Kenya tops the group with four points from a win and a draw. Morocco and DRC are tied on three points, Angola sits fourth with one, and Zambia is bottom without a point.

A victory for coach Benni McCarthy’s side over Morocco would seal a quarter-final spot with a game to spare, securing a KSh60 million reward from President William Ruto.
