Ruiru Market in Darkness: Traders Cry Out Over Month-Long Blackout.

Traders at Ruiru Market have voiced their distress, citing significant losses and missed opportunities due to a nearly one-month power outage. According to the traders, the power disconnection was a result of an outstanding bill amounting to Ksh 2.9 million.

Since December, the affected traders have been compelled to rely on candles, phones, and alternative lighting sources. One trader explained that when the Kenya Power Officer came to the market, he displayed a bill of Ksh 2.9 million.

Beyond the clear difficulties caused by the lack of electricity, the traders are facing more problems related to the market’s facilities. The only toilet available has become a big worry, as the disruption in water supply, connected to the electricity being cut off, has led to the closure of other toilets that need pumped water. This tough situation has made both male and female traders share a single facility, a situation they find inappropriate.

The traders expressed their disappointment, highlighting the absence of their leaders. They noted that unlike during the campaign period, none have visited since the electricity was disconnected nearly a month ago, leaving the traders feeling neglected and unsupported.

In an appeal for assistance, the traders urged the county leadership to intervene and settle the outstanding bill, enabling the restoration of electricity.
