Ruto vows to arrest corrupt MPs and senators caught soliciting bribes, pledges zero tolerance

President William Ruto has declared a crackdown on corruption in Parliament, warning that all lawmakers, including Members of Parliament and Senators, who solicit or receive bribes will face arrest and prosecution.

Speaking on Monday during a joint parliamentary group meeting of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement, Ruto expressed anger over reports that some lawmakers, particularly at committee levels, had been demanding bribes to influence legislative decisions.

“They are collecting money in the name of Parliament, and sometimes that money never gets to Parliament. Instead, it ends up in the pockets of a few individuals. We are not going to shame them; we are going to arrest them,” the President said.

Ruto cited the recent Anti-Money Laundering Bill, noting that cheques were used in attempts to sway the outcome of the legislation. He claimed that one Senator allegedly secured Ksh150 million to influence a House matter, though he did not reveal the lawmaker’s name.

“I am a consumer of raw intelligence. Do you, for example, know that a few members of the House here received up to Ksh10 million to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill? Do you know that? Did you get the money?” Ruto asked.

The President expressed frustration at the growing impunity in Parliament, stating that this culture of corruption is undermining the credibility of the institution. He warned that the government would confront the vice decisively and that no one would be spared, regardless of political affiliation or seniority.

This follows similar remarks Ruto made last week during the opening of the National Devolution Conference on August 13, where he criticized Parliament for soliciting bribes and called for accountability.
