Nominated MP Sabina Chege has criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for linking President William Ruto to Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Gachagua claimed Ruto engaged in questionable business deals with RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. He alleged these deals involved gold trade agreements that helped Hemedti launder money to buy firearms for the RSF during Sudan’s conflict.
Gachagua went further, calling Ruto the “real commander of RSF.” He claimed Ruto’s involvement began in 2023, when the president allegedly persuaded him to invite Hemedti to Kenya on an official visit. These accusations have sparked concerns about Kenya’s role in regional stability and its diplomatic ties with neighbors.
On Thursday, Sabina Chege condemned Gachagua’s remarks as reckless and unpatriotic. She warned that such statements could harm Kenya’s national security and international reputation. “Government positions come with responsibility; it’s not about making others look bad,” Chege said. She stressed the need for discretion in sensitive matters, adding, “When you take an oath, some things must remain untold for the country’s sake.”
Chege also criticized Gachagua’s call for international sanctions against Ruto. She argued that such actions could endanger Kenya’s security and diplomatic relations. Chege questioned Gachagua’s motives, suggesting his statements served personal interests rather than the nation’s welfare.
President Ruto has not responded to the allegations. However, the controversy has raised debates about Kenya’s ties with the RSF. Kenya has faced criticism for hosting RSF leaders in Nairobi for peace talks, which Sudan viewed as interference.
