Samidoh faces transfer to Anti-Stock Theft Unit in Gilgil amid political tension

The police force has transferred renowned Mugithi musician and officer Samuel Muchoki, popularly known as Samidoh, to the Administration Police’s Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) in Gilgil. His move follows a contentious performance that drew political attention and sparked concerns among senior officials.

Recently, Samidoh performed at a public event where audience members chanted “Wantam,” a phrase advocating for a one-term presidency for President William Ruto. Because the slogan, originally championed by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has become politically charged, senior police officers quickly took notice.

After the viral video circulated, officials at Jogoo House convened to address the situation. As a serving officer, Samidoh must remain politically neutral, yet his engagement with the chant raised questions about his adherence to that policy. Consequently, police commanders decided on May 18 to transfer him to Gilgil as a disciplinary measure.

As authorities finalize their review, Samidoh faces the possibility of additional disciplinary actions. Officials are weighing potential outcomes that range from a warning or fine to a demotion or even dismissal from the force. His case will pass through Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli and eventually land on Inspector General Douglas Kanja’s desk for final determination.

Beyond the police response, Samidoh’s transfer aligns with escalating political tensions in the Mt. Kenya region. Observers noted his recent visit to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s residence, where he joined several Kikuyu musicians. Among them were Karangu Muraya, Ben Githae, Jose Gatutura, DJ Fatxo, Sammy Irungu, Martin Wajanet, and Ngaruiya Junior.

Although speculation about his political leanings continues to swirl, Samidoh has remained silent. When contacted, he declined to comment on the transfer. For now, Samidoh must continue his duties at ASTU in Gilgil while awaiting further decisions from police authorities.
