Senate launches probe into Ritz-Carlton Maasai Mara project over potential harm to wildlife, ecosystems, and local communities

The Senate has launched a formal investigation into the Ritz-Carlton Maasai Mara Safari Camp following concerns over its impact on wildlife and local communities. Nominated Senator Miriam Omar petitioned Parliament, citing potential harm to fragile ecosystems, contamination of water sources, and obstruction of traditional wildlife migration routes.

Located near the Sand River, the luxury lodge has drawn criticism from Maasai elders and conservationists who argue its development could disrupt the Great Migration, a globally renowned wildlife spectacle. While the Kenya Wildlife Service maintains that GPS data shows migration routes remain intact, opponents warn human activity, artificial lighting, and noise could still disturb animals.

The Senate Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee has widened the inquiry to include another JW Marriott-affiliated project along the Mara River. The panel will examine whether permits and licenses complied with environmental regulations, assess the role of national and county authorities in monitoring potential disruptions, and review reports of intimidation of local communities opposing the lodge.

Senator Omar stressed the need for meaningful public participation under Articles 10 and 69 of the Constitution, urging the committee to investigate ecological, cultural, and socioeconomic consequences of luxury hospitality projects. The probe underscores the need to balance tourism growth with conservation in one of Kenya’s most iconic ecosystems.
