Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has called on Thika residents to actively participate in the ongoing public engagement on the town’s proposed elevation to city status, stressing that the process will shape the area’s future.
Speaking during a public participation forum held in Thika, the senator emphasised that the exercise is not a mere formality but a critical platform for wananchi to determine whether the town is ready for the transition.
Thang’wa noted that the decision to grant city status must be informed by the voices of residents, who stand to benefit or bear the consequences of the move. He urged community members, business operators and youth to turn up in large numbers and give their views candidly.
“This process is not a formality. It is about listening to the people and determining whether Thika is truly ready to become a city,” he said.
The senator highlighted that city status presents significant opportunities, including job creation, improved infrastructure and a more vibrant business environment. He noted that Thika has shown strong growth potential over the years, making it a key economic centre within Kiambu County.
However, Thang’wa cautioned that the upgrade must be matched with proper planning, accountability and readiness to avoid future challenges. He stressed the need for leaders to ensure all requirements are met before the final decision is made.
“City status comes with opportunity, but it also demands readiness and accountable leadership,” he added.
He further underscored the need to address any existing gaps with urgency, noting that delays could hinder progress and deny residents the benefits that come with urban transformation.
“The people of Thika deserve timely progress and real results,” he said.
Residents were encouraged to speak boldly and honestly during the forum, with Thang’wa emphasising that their input will directly influence the final outcome of the process.
The public participation exercise forms part of the broader assessment to determine Thika’s eligibility for city status, with stakeholder views expected to guide the final decision.
Thang’wa expressed confidence in Thika’s potential, noting that with proper planning and inclusive decision-making, the town is well-positioned to achieve city status and unlock new development opportunities.
