Senator Sifuna hits back after Ruto says Raila was his only worthy rival, vows ODM ready for 2027 showdown

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has hit back at President William Ruto over remarks suggesting that the late Raila Odinga would have been his only worthy challenger in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an ODM delegates meeting in Mombasa on Saturday, November 1, Sifuna dismissed Ruto’s claims, maintaining that ODM remains a formidable political force capable of unseating the President, even without its long-time leader.

“I have heard people saying that only the late Raila could have challenged them in 2027. The young lion is still a lion they will be shocked,” Sifuna said amid cheers from delegates.

The Nairobi Senator emphasized that ODM’s strength is built on collective effort, not one individual, and hinted that the party could front a new presidential candidate in the upcoming polls.

“I know we will win if we front any candidate in 2027. Even if you front me, we will still win,” he asserted confidently.

Sifuna’s comments followed President Ruto’s statement in Kakamega on Thursday, where he claimed that none of his potential opponents posed a significant threat, declaring that Raila was the only politician who could have challenged him.

“The only person who could have posed a challenge against me is Raila, but the rest are nothing to me; I will defeat them very early in the morning,” Ruto said during his development tour in Malava.

Ruto also accused opposition leaders of spreading divisive politics and lacking a clear agenda for Kenyans.

However, Sifuna warned the President against underestimating ODM’s influence, insisting that the party was already laying the groundwork to field candidates in all elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections.
