Senator Thang’wa Demands Swift Action on Kabete Land Compensation Delays

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has intensified his efforts to address the prolonged delays in compensating landowners affected by the Nairobi Western Bypass, which passes through Kabete Sub County.

In a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing, Thang’wa highlighted several critical issues related to the compensation process:

Timeline for Compensation:

Thang’wa demands clarity on the timeline for compensating residents whose land was acquired in 2018 for the construction of the Western Bypass. Despite the passage of time, many affected individuals have not received any compensation, leading to frustration and financial strain.

Transparency in Land Acquisition:

The senator emphasizes the need for transparency in the land acquisition process. Landowners have expressed concerns about the perceived unlawful acquisition of their properties by the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA). Thang’wa urges authorities to follow the Land Act of 2012 to ensure fairness and adherence to the law.

Addressing Inflation and Market Prices:

Thang’wa highlights the importance of considering inflation and current market land prices during the compensation process. Affected individuals are seeking re-evaluation to accurately reflect the current value of their land.

The National Land Commission (NLC) has issued valuation reports, but there are concerns that these reports may not fully account for inflation and market trends.

In response to these concerns, the government acknowledges challenges due to inadequate budgetary allocations in recent financial years. However, KeNHA has disbursed Ksh. 615 million out of a total award of Ksh. 1.98 billion for the project.

Regarding the land acquisition process, the government assures that all necessary procedures were followed. The NLC conducted valuations for compulsory land acquisition, and the government relies on their expertise to address any issues.

Despite these assurances, Senator Thang’wa continues to advocate for swift action and urges the government to prioritize resolving these issues and ensuring fair and timely compensation for Kabete landowners.
