The Social Health Authority (SHA) has disbursed Ksh.1.2 billion to 1,567 police officers injured while performing their duties, the Authority’s CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi confirmed on Thursday.
Appearing before the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations, Dr. Mwangangi assured senators that SHA is committed to ensuring all injured officers receive the benefits owed to them.
She noted that 432 claims were declined for various reasons, 129 remain disputed, and 95 are pending due to incomplete documentation. Additionally, 155 claims are under payment processing while 41 are under further review.
Senators expressed concern that SHA figures conflicted with data from the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH). Consequently, the Committee directed the three agencies to reconcile their records and submit a unified report.
Committee Chair Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi emphasized that no claim should be dismissed because an officer was allegedly off-duty, reminding that police officers are considered on duty 24 hours a day. He also clarified that DOSH remains the sole body legally mandated to conduct medical evaluations for compensation purposes.
The senators vowed rigorous oversight until every affected officer receives their rightful benefits, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting frontline officers injured in the line of duty.
