SHA warns Kenyans over rising fraud cases as impostors pose as officials to extort registration fees

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has cautioned Kenyans to be on the lookout for fraudsters impersonating its staff and conning unsuspecting citizens under the guise of helping with SHA registration.

In a statement issued on Friday, SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the impostors have been contacting members of the public, promising quick registration or expedited services for a fee.

“We are deeply saddened and concerned to learn that some members of the public have been defrauded by criminals impersonating SHA employees,” Mwangangi said. “Your trust is sacred to us, and it pains us greatly that dishonest individuals would exploit that trust for their own gain.”

The CEO clarified that SHA registration is entirely free of charge, emphasizing that no official or staff member is authorized to request money or personal details from citizens.

Mwangangi urged Kenyans to remain vigilant, warning that the authority does not provide any paid shortcuts or preferential treatment for its services.

She further encouraged the public to verify any SHA communication through official channels and report suspicious individuals or messages to the nearest police station or through the SHA customer service hotline.

“The safety and confidence of our members are our top priority,” she said, assuring that the Authority is collaborating with investigative agencies to identify and apprehend the fraudsters behind the scam.

The SHA continues to educate the public on its registration process as it rolls out health coverage programs nationwide, insisting that no payment is required at any stage of registration or service delivery.
