A suspect was shot and killed while attempting to vandalize a public water tank in Athena, Thika, on the morning of Sunday, December 15.
According to police, a group of about five individuals was caught dismantling the tank after authorities were alerted to the ongoing vandalism. Officers on patrol rushed to the scene and found the suspects in the act.
When ordered to surrender, the group reportedly advanced toward the officers wielding crude weapons, prompting one officer to fire three warning shots using an alibi rifle.
Despite the warnings, the confrontation escalated, and one suspect was fatally shot. The others managed to flee under the cover of darkness.
At the scene, police recovered several tools believed to have been used in the vandalism, including two spanners, nuts, and bolts.
The body of the deceased was taken to the mortuary for identification and an autopsy, while the search for the remaining accomplices continues.
Authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities around public infrastructure to help curb such incidents.
