Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu wins re-election with 97.6% of votes as protests erupt and security tightens

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has been declared the winner of the 2025 general election after securing a resounding 97.66 per cent of the total votes, according to results released by the Tanzanian Electoral Commission on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

The commission announced that President Suluhu garnered 31.9 million votes, while her closest rival, Chaumu, managed 213,414 votes, representing 0.65 per cent of the total ballots cast. Tanzania had 37 million registered voters.

The results, broadcast live on Tanzanian Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), came three days after the nation went to the polls on October 29. A swift swearing-in ceremony is expected later today, even as Suluhu has maintained a low public profile throughout the election period.

However, the outcome has sparked widespread protests across several regions, with demonstrators accusing the government of undermining democracy and suppressing opposition voices. The situation escalated after the main opposition candidate, Tundu Lissu, was detained throughout the election period, while another major contender was barred from the race.

Clashes have been reported in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Dodoma, with police using tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds. Gunfire was heard in Mwanza as police battled demonstrators demanding free and fair elections.

In response to the unrest, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Alfred Chalamila announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew, warning that authorities would act firmly against any attempts to disrupt order.

Eyewitnesses reported incidents of ballot box vandalism and property destruction as frustrated youths voiced anger over what they described as a “rigged election.”

Adding to the tension, the government imposed an internet blackout and restricted communications across the country, raising concerns about press freedom and censorship.

While official figures on casualties remain unclear, multiple reports indicate that dozens of people have been killed or injured in the chaos.

President Suluhu, who contested under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, rose to power in 2021 following the death of former President John Pombe Magufuli. Her re-election cements her position as Tanzania’s first female Head of State amid growing scrutiny over the country’s democratic space.
