Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has launched the construction of the Ksh70 million Cheera Modern Market in Mugwe Ward, directing a safe relocation of traders to a temporary site to allow the project to proceed smoothly.

Speaking during the site handover, Governor Njuki hailed the partnership between the National and County Governments, saying the market will provide a safe and organized space for trade, enhance livelihoods, and strengthen local commerce. He emphasized community participation in the project and noted that no bars will operate within the market, ensuring a productive business environment.

Patrick Mwangi, Regional Director for the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, confirmed the project will take nine months to complete, with the contractor committed to delivering on schedule. Residents of Tharaka Nithi are set to benefit from local job opportunities during construction, while local suppliers will provide materials, supporting economic growth.

Once complete, the Cheera Modern Market will offer traders a modern, secure space and is expected to stimulate business activity in Mugwe Ward and across Tharaka Nithi County, marking a milestone in the county’s development agenda.
