Thika residents give views on city status

Residents of Thika have been urged to actively participate in a public engagement forum on the town’s proposed elevation to city status, as the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations holds hearings in the area.

The session, taking place in Thika, is aimed at collecting views from the public on whether the fast-growing urban centre meets the threshold for conferment of city status. Leaders have emphasised that the exercise is not a mere formality, but a critical opportunity for wananchi to influence a decision that could shape the town’s future.

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa called on residents, business owners, youth and other stakeholders to turn up in large numbers and present their views openly. He noted that public participation is key in ensuring that the process reflects the true aspirations and concerns of the people.

“This is your moment to speak and shape a decision that will define the future of Thika for generations,” Thang’wa said.

The push for city status is seen as a major milestone for Thika, which has experienced rapid growth in population, business activity and infrastructure in recent years. If approved, the new status is expected to unlock increased investment, create employment opportunities and improve service delivery.

However, leaders have cautioned that the transition also comes with significant responsibilities. Thang’wa stressed the need for proper planning, strong governance structures and accountability to ensure the town is fully prepared for the upgrade.

He noted that achieving city status requires meeting specific criteria, including infrastructure development, urban planning standards and effective service provision. Any existing gaps, he said, must be addressed urgently to avoid future challenges.

“City status comes with opportunity, but it also demands readiness and accountable leadership,” he added.

The Senate committee is expected to gather views from a wide range of stakeholders before making its recommendations on whether Thika qualifies for elevation. The outcome of the process will play a crucial role in determining the town’s next phase of development.

Residents have been encouraged to take advantage of the forum to voice their opinions, concerns and expectations, as the decision is expected to have long-term implications on economic growth, governance and quality of life.

As deliberations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that the voices of Thika residents are heard and reflected in the final decision on the town’s proposed city status.
