Thika Road turns tense as Gen Z protesters force police to retreat in Roysambu clashes

 Thika Road in Roysambu became the epicenter of escalating youth-led protests as demonstrators clashed with security forces in a show of defiance marking the first anniversary of last year’s Finance Bill demonstrations. The usually busy highway was brought to a standstill after protesters breached police barricades and flooded the roads, outnumbering and overwhelming deployed officers.

The protests, spearheaded by Gen Z youth, began in the early hours with organized groups assembling at strategic junctions. Their message was clear: justice for victims of past protests, resistance against oppressive economic policies, and a demand for systemic accountability.

“What started as a peaceful march turned chaotic when officers fired teargas at a crowd that had simply been chanting and waving placards,” said a Roysambu resident who witnessed the standoff. “Instead of retreating, the protesters regrouped quickly and surged forward.”

By mid-morning, videos circulating online showed protesters dismantling metal barricades and advancing into previously restricted zones. Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) and Anti-Riot Police Unit appeared momentarily overrun. Eye-witnesses described the moment as a turning tide both symbolically and literally, as the crowd reclaimed the road and forced a police retreat.

Despite the tension, many demonstrators carried flowers and placards bearing the names of those killed during last year’s protests. Their chants of “Haki yetu” (our right) echoed throughout the suburb. Others painted symbolic messages on tarmac, including “We are not the enemy” and “Remember Ojwang.”

Security agencies had anticipated protests and established early-morning roadblocks on routes leading into the CBD, including Kiambu Road and Limuru Road. However, these efforts proved insufficient to hold back what some observers called the most coordinated youth-led demonstration since last year.

Local politicians have issued mixed reactions. Some urged restraint, while others praised the youth for organizing peacefully and standing firm in pursuit of justice. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi called for “cool heads” while acknowledging the “serious grievances that cannot be ignored.”

As the protests spread to other towns including Kisumu, Meru, and Mombasa, police confirmed several injuries but refrained from disclosing further details. By afternoon, roads leading into Nairobi remained heavily guarded, though pockets of protest continued.
