TikTok, the popular short-form video platform, held a forum at Zetech University in Ruiru SubCounty to educate students and other stakeholders about user safety.
The forum was attended by TikTok’s Director of Government Relations & Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa, Fortune Sibanda, and the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Njenga Munene. During the event, Sibanda highlighted the platform’s commitment to fostering a secure and positive online environment.
As Kenya continues to lead the world in TikTok usage, the forum aimed to address the growing concerns surrounding online safety and provide students with valuable insights into protecting themselves and their communities.
Sibanda discussed TikTok’s ongoing efforts to enhance platform safety, including the establishment of Safety Advisory Councils across Sub-Saharan Africa. These councils bring together experts from various fields to develop effective policies and address regional safety concerns.
Prof. Njenga Munene emphasized the importance of responsible social media usage, particularly for young people. He advised students to be mindful of the content they consume and share online and to protect themselves from harmful influences.
Local content creators have been advocating for better compensation from multinational social media companies for the content they publish. Sibanda acknowledged this concern, stating that Kenyan creators will continue to depend on the available monetization methods, such as gifting or payment by brands. He assured that TikTok is exploring additional ways to support creators and will make further announcements in due course.
