The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) has petitioned President William Ruto, the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the Council of Governors, and the Attorney General over unlawful county levies imposed on trucks. According to KTA, several counties are charging fees ranging from Ksh500 to Ksh30,000 for trucks merely transiting national roads, without parking or receiving any services.
KTA Chairman Newton Wang’oo accused seven counties: Migori, Marsabit, Tana River, Kajiado, Kilifi, Kwale, and Machakos—of imposing transit fees, entry fees, and truck registration charges that violate the Constitution and cripple business operations.
The association further condemned the misuse of branding and distribution permit laws, which require transporters to pay between Ksh60,000 and Ksh150,000 per truck for deliveries within certain counties.
“These levies fuel corruption, increase operating costs, and raise commodity prices nationwide,” KTA stated. The association has called for an immediate halt to the charges and a legal review of all county bylaws to ensure compliance with Article 209(5) of the Constitution.
