Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has formally announced the removal of Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale as Senate Majority Chief Whip, marking a decisive political shift within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
In a communication to the House on Tuesday, Speaker Kingi confirmed receiving minutes from a UDA meeting held on December 2, where members resolved to drop Khalwale from the key leadership position. He noted that the decision met all legal requirements and took effect immediately.
The party has appointed Bungoma Senator David Wakoli Wafula as the new Majority Whip, replacing Khalwale in accordance with Senate Standing Order 22(5).
The move follows months of open friction between Khalwale and the UDA hierarchy, triggered by his decision to support DAP-K’s Seth Panyako in the Malava parliamentary race instead of the party’s preferred candidate, David Ndakwa. The Senator publicly defied pressure to fall in line, insisting he was being intimidated for exercising independent political choice.
Khalwale has also accused the party of retaliatory actions, claiming that all his security officers were abruptly withdrawn without explanation.
“My security details have been pulled without any warning,” he complained on November 26, alleging political punishment.
His removal now formalizes a rift that had grown increasingly visible, setting the stage for new political realignments within UDA as the Senate leadership adjusts to the change.
