University students allied to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) have launched a youth-driven movement advocating for democracy, good governance, and inclusion in national leadership.
The movement, known as the Mt Kenya Citizens Defenders (MCD), brings together student leaders from universities across Central Kenya and Nairobi to champion accountability, transparency, and economic renewal.
Speaking during the official launch at Unicity along Thika Road, MCD Secretary General Stephen Mwangi said the group’s mission is to “solidify grassroots democracy” and ensure young people are not sidelined in the 2027 elections.
Mwangi warned that attempts to lock out the youth through delayed or inadequate voter registration will be firmly resisted, adding that civic education drives will soon be rolled out to empower citizens on governance and economic justice.
The group also plans to leverage social media to hold leaders especially Members of Parliament and Governors accountable to the electorate.
In solidarity with Tanzanian citizens protesting electoral injustices, the student leaders condemned the suppression of democratic rights in the neighbouring country.
They further expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to resolve the ongoing lecturers’ strike, which has disrupted learning in universities, and criticized the Nyota Youth Empowerment Program, terming it ineffective and unbeneficial to university students.
Mwangi added that MCD intends to collaborate with youth groups from other opposition parties, including ODM and DAP-K, to build a united national front that amplifies young voices and pushes for transformative governance.
