Veteran KBC broadcaster Charles Omuga Kabisae passes away after long illness

Legendary radio voice Charles Omuga Kabisae, best known for his dignified delivery of death and special announcements on KBC, has died after a long illness.

Kabisae passed away on August 11, and his body has been moved to a Nairobi morgue as his family begins funeral arrangements.

A broadcasting icon, Kabisae started his career at KBC’s Dholuo Service in Kisumu before joining the Kiswahili Service in the early 1990s, a move that broadened his audience and cemented his status as one of Kenya’s most respected radio personalities.

Born in Nyamasaria, Kisumu County, an area known for producing outstanding broadcasters such as the late Evans Odhiambo Sino, Caleb Odhiambo Akumu, and Omollo Abisa, Kabisae became a household name through his rich voice and unshakable professionalism.

His career began memorably during his internship when he announced the death of a person, only for news to arrive hours later that the individual was alive. Ordered to make a public correction, Kabisae handled the moment with such composure that senior management took notice, launching a career that would span decades.

He became a trusted voice at a time when radio was the country’s main source of information, long before the smartphone era. Kabisae worked alongside industry greats, including the late Leonard Mambo Mbotela, who died on February 5, 2025.
