Violence Erupts Over Land Dispute in Kilgoris as Senator Issues Warning

A deadly land conflict has escalated in Ang’ata Barikoi, Kilgoris, prompting Narok Senator Ledama Olekina to issue a strong warning. The dispute over a 6,300-acre parcel has turned violent, leading to the deaths of five people and renewed political tension.

On April 29, 2025, Senator Olekina shared his concerns on his official X account. He condemned efforts to subdivide the land and called for 5,000 acres to be preserved for future generations of the Siria-Maasai community.

“The 6,500 acres reserved by the Siria-Maasai for future generations are under threat,” he said. “Although the court allowed the Kipsigis of Ang’ata Barikoi to receive 1,500 acres, the rest must remain untouched.”

Olekina warned that no one should attempt to divide the land further, regardless of their position or influence.

The senator’s remarks followed violent protests on April 28. Residents who opposed the land demarcation clashed with security forces. The confrontation left five people dead.

Olekina expressed sorrow for the loss of life. He offered condolences to the affected families and promised to stand with them in the fight for justice.

The land has been claimed by both the Kipsigis and Maasai communities. Over 3,000 Kipsigis residents have lived and farmed in the area for more than 50 years. They say they inherited valid title deeds and view the land as rightfully theirs.

Tensions rose when government surveyors arrived with armed security personnel to mark new boundaries. The Kipsigis community saw the move as a threat to their ancestral land.

Following the fatal clashes, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja visited the area. During the visit, he admitted that the police had used excessive force and offered an official apology.
