Wamatangi issues cheques to boda boda Saccos in Gatundu South

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has issued cheques to boda boda Saccos in four wards within Gatundu South Sub-County as part of the ongoing rollout of the county’s Kazi na Boda empowerment programme.

The beneficiaries, drawn from Ndarugu, Kiganjo, Kiamwangi and Ngenda wards, received financial support aimed at strengthening their savings, expanding access to loans, and supporting income-generating activities within the boda boda sector.

The initiative is part of a broader countywide programme targeting all 60 wards, with the aim of improving livelihoods for thousands of riders who depend on the sector for daily income.

Speaking during the disbursement, Wamatangi said the programme is designed to transform the boda boda industry by encouraging riders to organise themselves into Saccos, which provide structured financial systems for savings and credit access.

He noted that the funding will enable members to access affordable loans, grow their investments, and reduce dependence on informal and often costly lending platforms that have left many riders struggling with debt.

The governor emphasised that the county is committed to ensuring that the programme reaches all corners of Kiambu, with each ward set to benefit as implementation continues.

“The boda boda sector plays a critical role in our local economy by providing employment to many young people. Through this programme, we are supporting riders to grow financially and achieve stability,” he said.

County officials indicated that the funds will also support group-based projects within Saccos, allowing members to invest in ventures that can generate additional income beyond daily transport operations.

The move has been welcomed by local riders, who expressed optimism that the financial boost will help them improve their businesses and secure better financial footing.

Some riders noted that access to structured loans through Saccos will enable them to purchase motorcycles, expand their operations, and meet personal financial needs without turning to high-interest lenders.

The Kazi na Boda programme is expected to play a key role in strengthening cooperative structures among boda boda operators, promoting a culture of saving and financial discipline.

As the county continues with the rollout, the initiative is seen as part of a broader strategy to empower youth, enhance economic inclusion, and build sustainable livelihoods across Kiambu.

With more wards set to benefit in the coming months, the programme signals a growing focus by the county government on grassroots economic transformation.
