Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has launched the “Kazi na Boda” initiative, a new county programme aimed at strengthening the economic capacity of bodaboda riders through organised savings and cooperative structures.
The initiative, unveiled during an event in Githurai, seeks to encourage bodaboda operators to organise themselves into structured Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (Saccos) to improve financial management, access opportunities, and grow their businesses.
During the launch, the governor oversaw the distribution of cheques to several bodaboda Saccos drawn from Mwiki, Kiuu, Mwihoko, Kahawa Sukari and Kahawa Wendani wards within Githurai Sub-County.
Under the programme, each ward will receive Ksh1 million to support registered bodaboda groups and strengthen their economic activities.
Speaking during the event, Wamatangi said the initiative is part of the county government’s broader strategy to empower youth and informal sector workers who depend on the bodaboda industry for their livelihoods.
He noted that the bodaboda sector plays a critical role in local transport and employment, particularly among young people, making it important for county leadership to support riders with sustainable economic programmes.
The governor urged riders to organise themselves into well-structured Saccos that can help them access financial support, manage savings effectively, and expand their businesses.
He further emphasised that strong cooperative structures will enable riders to benefit from government empowerment programmes and improve their financial stability.
County officials said the Kazi na Boda initiative will not be limited to Githurai Sub-County. The programme will gradually be rolled out across all wards in Kiambu County to ensure bodaboda operators in different areas benefit equally.
The county government believes the initiative will promote financial inclusion among riders while encouraging discipline in savings and investment through organised groups.
Leaders present at the launch also urged bodaboda operators to use the funds responsibly and strengthen their Saccos to create long-term economic opportunities for their members.
The county administration maintains that empowering bodaboda riders remains a priority, noting that the sector supports thousands of families and contributes significantly to local economic activity.
Through initiatives such as Kazi na Boda, the county government hopes to build a more organised and economically stable bodaboda sector while supporting youth employment and entrepreneurship across Kiambu.
