Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has escalated his criticism of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, arguing that his influence in the opposition hinges solely on his ability to rally Mount Kenya against the government.
In a statement on Saturday, September 20, Wambugu claimed Gachagua’s relevance in the opposition “is based entirely on his ability to charge Mt Kenya. Without this, he is of absolutely no use to Kalonzo & Co.”
Wambugu added that Gachagua’s fellow opposition principals have only embraced him because of his capacity to polarize the mountain, warning that a decline in his influence could weaken his political standing.
Gachagua, who has declared his interest in the 2027 presidential race despite facing impeachment, maintains he is the most suitable candidate to unseat President William Ruto. Speaking recently at a church service in Nyeri, Gachagua vowed to return Kenya to the economic legacy of former President Mwai Kibaki, where education was free and the economy thrived.
He also promised to abolish the government’s affordable housing program, instead handing it over to county governors to manage, collect rent and refund Kenyans already contributing through the housing levy.
