The State Department for Wildlife has come under scrutiny for spending Ksh1.2 billion on legal fees while leaving critical conservation projects largely unfunded, according to the Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang’o.
Her report for the 2024/2025 financial year reveals some projects recorded completion rates as low as three per cent. Legal dues, arbitration, and compensation accounted for Ksh957.43 million of the expenditure.
Despite receiving an additional Ksh900 million to support programme implementation, crucial initiatives, including wildlife water provision, construction of four research and training centres, and the National Integrated Wildlife Data Portal, remain unfunded.
The Capital Youth Caucus Association petitioned Parliament, citing inefficiency, misallocation of funds, and threats to Kenya’s tourism competitiveness and youth employment.
