Wiper leader Kalonzo urges African leaders to embrace Gen Z-led Pan-Africanism as new wave of youth activism rises

Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has called on African leaders to recognize and support the emerging youth-led wave of Pan-Africanism, describing it as a powerful movement shaping the continent’s future.

Speaking on Sunday during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Centre for Pan-African Institute at Lukenya University in Makueni County, the former Vice President said the new generation of African youth was redefining patriotism through peaceful activism and a renewed demand for transparency, justice, and good governance.

“This surge of youth-led Pan-Africanism is not an accident,” said Kalonzo. “These peaceful demonstrations are not acts of recklessness they are acts of hope and determination.”

He urged African governments to stop criminalizing peaceful protests, adding that the current generation’s push for reform mirrors the liberation struggles that once freed Africa from colonial rule.

Kalonzo said the new institute will serve as a hub for innovation, education, and dialogue, bringing Pan-African ideals to life while nurturing leadership committed to unity and sustainable growth.

“As we break ground for the Pan-African Institute today, let this remind us that Africa’s future is in our hands. This should be a place where ideas ignite and talents are nurtured,” he said.

Former Botswana President Lt. Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, who was the chief guest, called for integrity and unity to guide Africa’s development journey, while Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. urged African states to uphold honesty and fairness in elections.

The event also saw the conferment of an honorary doctorate to former President Khama for his contribution to African unity and leadership. Other dignitaries present included former Liberian Vice President Jewel Cianeh Taylor and Prof. Patrick Lumumba, who chairs the new Pan-African Institute.
