KeNHA begins JKIA–Westlands highway facelift project

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially commenced the upgrade of the Mombasa Road–Westlands highway, marking a major step in the facelift of Nairobi’s key transport corridor.

The 27-kilometre project was formally handed over to China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) on Friday following a site visit led by KeNHA Director of Maintenance, Engineer Ezekiel Fukwo. The works will stretch from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) along Mombasa Road to ABC Place on Waiyaki Way.

KeNHA said the project follows a presidential directive aimed at modernising infrastructure around Kenya’s main international gateway. While beautification and landscaping form a major component, the authority noted that the works will also include safety improvements and infrastructure upgrades to enhance the experience of road users.

The authority added that environmentally sustainable designs will be incorporated to improve the highway’s appearance while protecting surrounding ecosystems.

The project was announced days after President William Ruto confirmed plans to rehabilitate and beautify the JKIA–Uhuru Highway–Waiyaki Way route, citing the need to restore the lower road following the completion of the Nairobi Expressway.
