The Kiambu County Government has issued a directive requiring all developers with unapproved buildings to regularise their construction plans in line with existing planning regulations, in a renewed push to enforce orderly urban development across the county.
In the notice, the county has urged all affected property owners and developers to submit their applications to the respective Sub-County Physical Planner offices on or before 31st May, 2026, warning that failure to comply could attract enforcement action under county planning laws.
The directive targets structures that were either constructed without prior approval or those whose plans were not formally approved before development commenced. The county says the move is part of broader efforts to streamline development, enhance safety standards, and ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.
According to the announcement, approval timelines have been clearly outlined to facilitate faster processing of applications once submitted. Single dwelling units will be processed within seven days, while commercial buildings will take up to three weeks for approval, depending on compliance with set requirements.
County officials say the streamlined timelines are intended to reduce delays that have previously frustrated developers while ensuring that all buildings meet structural, environmental, and zoning standards before being fully approved.
Residents and developers have been encouraged to take advantage of the window provided and ensure that all documentation is submitted within the stipulated deadline to avoid penalties or possible demolition of non-compliant structures.
The county government further emphasised that adherence to planning regulations is critical in preventing haphazard developments that could compromise safety, strain infrastructure, and distort urban growth patterns in both urban and peri-urban areas.
In recent years, Kiambu County has experienced rapid growth in real estate development, driven by increased demand for housing and commercial spaces.
