Athletes from the Teso community have been urged to prioritise education alongside sporting talent to unlock life-changing international opportunities.
Speaking during the Elalai Cross Country Championship in Teso North, Elalai Training Camp coach Charles Kamau warned that several promising athletes continue to miss out on overseas scholarships due to poor academic performance.
Despite strong performances during the December 26 championships, Kamau said none of the local athletes qualified for four available international scholarships to Kingston College and Jamaica University after failing to meet the minimum KCSE requirement of C-Plain.
The scholarships included one slot for a girl and three for boys.
Kamau said the camp has shifted focus to identifying academically disciplined learners from schools within the community who also show potential in middle- and long-distance running.
He cautioned young athletes against focusing solely on talent, saying discipline and education remain critical for long-term success.
