Kikuyu streetlight repairs gain momentum

Residents of Kikuyu Ward are set to benefit from improved security and visibility following the commencement of a major streetlight repair and maintenance exercise by the Kiambu County Directorate of Utilities.

The county government has launched the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to restore faulty streetlights and enhance public safety across various parts of the ward. The exercise targets floodlights, solar-powered streetlights and conventional street lighting systems that have been non-functional for some time.

According to Kikuyu Ward MCA Kamau James Boro, the repair works are being undertaken with support from the Directorate of Utilities and are expected to significantly improve lighting infrastructure within the area. He noted that approximately 60 per cent of the faulty streetlights in the ward are expected to be restored and operational once the current phase of repairs is completed.

The project covers several key locations within the ward. Areas earmarked for repair of 15-metre floodlights include Kiriti, where two units are being worked on, as well as Kidfarmaco, Thogoto, Kiawamagira, Rumwe, Ondiri Jehovah Area, Mutaratara and Dagoretti Market.

In addition, the county is repairing solar streetlights located at Kidfarmaco Lane 4, Kikuyu Town, Nderi Road and Kiawamagira. Streetlights within Kikuyu Town have also been included in the maintenance programme to improve lighting in busy commercial and residential areas.

Residents have previously raised concerns over faulty streetlights, citing security challenges and reduced visibility for motorists, pedestrians and business operators during night hours. The ongoing repairs are expected to address these concerns and create a safer environment for the community.

Kamau welcomed the intervention by the Directorate of Utilities, saying the improvements will benefit residents, traders and road users across the ward. He emphasized that proper street lighting plays a critical role in crime prevention, road safety and supporting economic activity after dark.

The MCA also assured residents that engagement with the county executive will continue to ensure remaining faulty lights are repaired in future phases of the programme. He said the goal is to achieve broader coverage and ensure all public lighting infrastructure within the ward functions effectively.

The repair exercise forms part of the county government’s wider efforts to improve public infrastructure and enhance service delivery. Once completed, the project is expected to boost security, improve movement at night and contribute to a more conducive environment for businesses and residents throughout Kikuyu Ward.
