The government has introduced strict operating hours for school buses, barring them from using public roads before 6am and after 6pm in a move aimed at protecting learners.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced the directive, citing heightened safety and security risks associated with early morning and late evening travel. Authorities say poor visibility, driver fatigue and insecurity during these hours have significantly increased the danger for school-going children.
The decision comes against the backdrop of a worrying spike in road accidents across the country, which police have described as a growing road safety crisis. Several fatal crashes recorded in recent weeks have involved buses and public service vehicles on major highways.
Transport regulators say enforcement will be firm, alongside a wider crackdown on speeding, reckless driving and drunk driving. The government has also urged the public to report traffic offenders as part of efforts to curb road carnage and safeguard lives.
