Former minister Gideon Konchella dies

Former Kilgoris Member of Parliament and former Cabinet Minister Gideon Sitelu Konchella has died, bringing to an end a long political career that saw him serve residents of Narok County and the nation in various leadership positions.

According to reports, Konchella passed away on Saturday while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital after battling a long illness. News of his death has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from leaders, residents and political allies who worked with him over the years.

Konchella was a familiar figure in Kenya’s political landscape, having represented Kilgoris Constituency for several terms between 2003 and 2022. During that period, he served under different political parties and remained one of the most influential leaders in Narok County.

Beyond Parliament, Konchella also served in the Cabinet during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki. He held the position of Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons between 2006 and 2007, where he was involved in shaping policies affecting immigration and refugee management in the country.

One of the notable developments during his tenure was the implementation of the Refugee Act of 2006, legislation that provided a legal framework for the registration and protection of refugees in Kenya. The law marked a significant shift in the country’s approach to refugee affairs and remains one of the key milestones associated with his time in government.

After years of active politics, Konchella stepped away from the Kilgoris parliamentary race ahead of the 2022 General Election. He later sought the Narok Senate seat but was unsuccessful in his bid.

Current Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli was among the leaders who paid tribute to the late politician. He described Konchella as both a predecessor and successor in the constituency’s leadership and acknowledged his long service to the people of Kilgoris.

Sunkuli noted that the late leader dedicated many years to public service and played a significant role in shaping political leadership within the region.

As news of his passing spread, residents across Narok County joined leaders in mourning a man many described as experienced, accessible and committed to serving his constituents.

At the time of publication, the family had not released details regarding funeral arrangements. However, tributes continued to stream in from across the political divide as Kenyans remembered Konchella’s contribution to public service, governance and leadership.

His death marks the end of a political journey that spanned nearly two decades and left a lasting impact on Kilgoris Constituency and Narok County.
