At least 400 learners from disadvantaged backgrounds will access secondary school education after the M-Pesa Foundation expanded its Citizens of the Future Sponsorship Award Programme.
The expansion was launched at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy in Thika, where Safaricom PLC Director for Sustainable Business and Social Impact Karen Basiye said the initiative targets bright but vulnerable learners whose education is threatened by poverty.
Under the programme, 150 students will join the M-Pesa Foundation Academy, while others will be placed in partner secondary schools across the country. Beneficiaries include academically gifted learners from low-income families and children’s homes.
Basiye said Ksh500 million has been set aside to support Grade 10 to Grade 12 learners, with long-term investment projected to reach Ksh1 billion and benefit over 1,200 learners nationwide, including support through tertiary education.
Several beneficiaries described the scholarship as life-changing, saying it restored hope and secured their education future.
