Health ministry orders medical checks for Kenyans joining tree-hugging challenges

The Ministry of Health has cautioned Kenyans against engaging in prolonged tree-hugging challenges without first undergoing a medical check-up, citing growing health concerns.

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said the activity, popularised by activist Truphena Muthoni’s 72-hour tree-hugging challenge, is physically demanding and could pose serious risks if undertaken without medical assessment.

The challenge has since spread across the country, with participants using it to raise awareness on issues ranging from environmental conservation to school fees and insecurity. However, the ministry says several participants have collapsed and required hospitalisation after extended periods of tree hugging.

While the government is not banning the activity, it insists medical clearance, proper preparation and gradual training are necessary to safeguard participants’ health.
