IEBC ramps up February 26 by-election preparations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has intensified preparations ahead of the February 26 by-elections, outlining key focus areas aimed at delivering a credible, secure and well-coordinated electoral process.

The by-elections will be held in Isiolo South Constituency and the County Assembly wards of West Kabras, Evurore and Muminji following the death or resignation of former officeholders.

Speaking during a joint national planning workshop held in Naivasha on Friday, the Commission said voter education, security planning, staff readiness and inter-agency coordination remain central to the success of the mini-polls.

IEBC Commissioner Marykaren Sorobit underscored the need for enhanced civic education, noting that many voters still lack sufficient understanding of electoral processes.

The workshop addressed critical operational areas including voter register integrity, staff training, data protection compliance, security arrangements, candidate registration, audit procedures and stakeholder engagement.

IEBC Chief Executive Officer Marjan Hussein Marjan acknowledged persistent challenges such as voter apathy, delayed funding, misinformation on social media and scheduling conflicts with the school calendar, calling for early risk mitigation and clear communication.

Drawing from past by-elections, the Commission said lessons on political interference and isolated security incidents have informed stricter supervision, early vetting and closer collaboration with security agencies.

The IEBC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting transparent, peaceful and credible by-elections that reflect the will of voters.
