Sifuna dismisses ODM exit claims, questions party leadership

Nairobi Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has dismissed claims that he plans to quit the party, insisting his membership remains intact despite growing internal tensions.

Speaking during a television interview on Tuesday night, Sifuna brushed off reports linking him to the Democracy for the Citizens Party associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He said the only way he could vacate the secretary general position is through a properly constituted delegates’ conference.

Sifuna also weighed in on divisions within ODM over cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), arguing that the memorandum of understanding signed with President William Ruto’s party does not amount to a political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. He maintained that ODM should field its own presidential candidate.

The senator further questioned the legitimacy of the current party leadership, claiming no valid delegates’ conference was held to sanction recent changes. He also raised concerns over the financing of recent rallies branded as ODM events, alleging the existence of parallel funding not sanctioned by official party structures.
