Kiambu Majority Leader Mucheke urges MPs to pursue SHA hospital debt

Kiambu County Assembly Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke has challenged Members of Parliament from Kiambu County to focus on pushing for the release of funds owed to county hospitals by the Social Health Authority (SHA) instead of interfering with county projects.

Speaking amid growing political tension within Kiambu leadership circles, Mucheke accused some MPs of allegedly seeking political mileage by attempting to control county development projects associated with Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

According to the Majority Leader, elected leaders should instead prioritize issues directly affecting residents, particularly the financial challenges facing public health facilities in the county.

Mucheke claimed SHA owes Kiambu County hospitals nearly Ksh1 billion for services already rendered, warning that the delayed remittances are straining healthcare operations and affecting service delivery across public facilities.

He argued that MPs have a greater responsibility to use their influence at the national level to push for the release of the funds rather than engaging in political battles over county projects.

The remarks come at a time when public hospitals in different counties continue to face operational difficulties linked to delayed reimbursements under the new health financing system.

Healthcare workers and county leaders in several regions have repeatedly raised concerns over delayed payments, saying the situation has affected procurement of medicine, payment of suppliers, and delivery of essential medical services.

Mucheke maintained that Kiambu residents expect leaders to work together in addressing challenges facing hospitals, roads, and other essential services instead of engaging in unnecessary political competition.

He further argued that healthcare remains one of the most critical sectors in the county and requires collective support from both county and national leaders.

The Majority Leader also appeared to dismiss attempts by some MPs to position themselves as supervisors of county government projects, insisting that oversight roles are already clearly defined under the law.

His comments are likely to intensify the ongoing political rivalry within Kiambu County, where differences between sections of county and national leaders have increasingly played out publicly.

The debate over SHA remittances has continued to attract national attention as counties push for faster release of funds to ease pressure on struggling public hospitals.

Residents in Kiambu have also expressed concern over the state of healthcare services, with leaders now under pressure to ensure hospitals remain operational despite financial constraints.

Mucheke called for unity among leaders and urged all elected representatives to focus on solving problems affecting ordinary wananchi rather than engaging in political supremacy battles.

His remarks now add a fresh political dimension to the ongoing discussion surrounding healthcare funding and leadership wrangles in Kiambu County.
