The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has formally disowned the activities and public statements of Oketch Salah, clarifying that he does not act or speak on behalf of the party and that his recent engagements were undertaken in a personal capacity.
The clarification follows a high-profile event organised by Salah at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where attendees were seen wearing ODM-branded caps and t-shirts printed with the image of President William Ruto. The incident sparked internal unease within the party, with members questioning whether the activity had received official approval.
Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi publicly raised concerns over the matter, questioning when ODM leadership sanctioned the use of party regalia bearing the President’s image. His remarks added to growing pressure on the party to clarify its position amid perceptions of mixed political messaging.
In a statement, ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga firmly dismissed any association with the event, stating that Salah’s actions neither represent nor bind the party. She emphasised that all official ODM programmes and engagements are coordinated through the Party Secretariat and must receive approval from the party leadership.
Wanga further cautioned grassroots leaders, members and supporters against organising or participating in activities using the ODM name without proper clearance, reiterating the party’s commitment to discipline and structured engagement.
Salah’s growing visibility in national politics has drawn attention following his close association with the late ODM leader Raila Odinga. Previously unknown on the national stage, he became a familiar figure after frequently appearing alongside Raila at public events and on social media shortly before the veteran politician’s death.
At one public rally, Raila introduced Salah to supporters as a political son, a moment that elevated his profile. Following Raila’s death, Salah remained visible during funeral arrangements and public engagements, at times issuing statements about Raila’s final days.
However, members of Raila Odinga’s family have publicly distanced themselves from Salah. Raila’s daughter Winnie Odinga said she had met him but did not know him well, while Raila Junior dismissed Salah’s claims in a brief social media response.
ODM says the latest clarification is aimed at safeguarding party structures and preventing unauthorised activities as it navigates internal cohesion and public scrutiny.
