Maraga sticks to 2027 bid, vows to challenge Ruto, fight corruption and improve governance

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has firmly declared he will not step aside from the 2027 presidential race, challenging President William Ruto and vowing to offer Kenyans a reform-driven alternative.

Speaking in Meru on Monday, February 16, 2026, during the launch of his campaign across Meru and Isiolo counties, Maraga dismissed claims that political negotiations could push him out. The United Green Movement (UGM) flag bearer said his bid is rooted in integrity, rule of law, and accountability, and will not be swayed by intimidation or inducements.

Maraga accused the current administration of corruption, impunity, and unequal distribution of resources. He promised his government would prioritize fair development, anti-graft measures, and respect for human rights.

He also criticized the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for inaccessible voter registration systems, particularly in remote areas, urging decentralization to increase youth participation ahead of the 2027 polls.

Maraga condemned what he described as inadequate government drought responses in northern Kenya, highlighting gaps in support for affected communities and calling for better coordination in humanitarian interventions. He further urged the state to avoid unlawful use of force, including in public gatherings and places of worship.

The former CJ indicated openness to forming principled coalitions with like-minded parties but emphasized that alliances must be built on shared values and the pursuit of national transformation.
