Kiambu recognised for digital transformation and revenue growth

Kiambu County has been recognised as one of the top-performing counties in automation, e-government and employment creation, marking a major milestone in its push towards digital transformation.

The recognition, awarded by the Kenya Vision 2030 Secretariat, highlights the county’s sustained efforts to modernise public service delivery through technology-driven systems. County officials say the achievement reflects a deliberate strategy to improve efficiency, accountability and service access for residents.

At the centre of this transformation is the adoption of a comprehensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The platform has enabled the county to automate key government functions, including revenue collection, hospital operations, land administration, development approvals and fleet management.

Officials note that the integration of these services into a single digital system has reduced inefficiencies, minimised delays and improved transparency in the management of public resources. Residents are now able to access services more quickly, while internal operations have become more streamlined.

The impact of the digital shift is already being felt in the county’s financial performance. Kiambu’s own-source revenue has grown significantly to over Ksh 5.4 billion, a milestone achieved without introducing new levies or increasing existing charges.

Leaders attribute this growth to improved systems that have sealed revenue leakages and enhanced compliance. By digitising payments and records, the county has been able to widen its revenue base while maintaining fairness for taxpayers.

Beyond revenue collection, the digital transformation has also supported broader economic goals, including job creation and improved service delivery in critical sectors such as healthcare and land management.

The recognition places Kiambu among counties that are increasingly embracing innovation to drive development. It also reflects a growing trend across the country where devolved units are turning to technology to address longstanding challenges in governance.

County leadership has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the gains made through digital systems, noting that continued investment in technology will further strengthen service delivery and economic growth.

As counties compete to improve efficiency and attract investment, Kiambu’s model of leveraging technology to enhance governance could serve as a benchmark for others seeking to modernise operations and improve outcomes for residents.
