Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has openly questioned President William Ruto’s intentions amid claims that some Members of Parliament are plotting to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Thang’wa spoke on Sunday, September 22, 2024, during a church service in Kiambu. He raised direct questions about the President’s role in the alleged plot while accompanying the Deputy President.
The Kiambu Senator expressed concerns about the impeachment motion against DP Gachagua being tabled in the House. He warned that such a move could damage trust in President Ruto’s leadership, especially among his political allies. Thang’wa suggested that this action could lead other regions to rethink their political alliances with the President.
“We want to ask the President, if you can allow the Deputy President to be subjected to such and he is the one who supported you, can you be trusted by any other person?” Senator Karungo questioned.
Thang’wa noted that this was a critical question directed at the President. He stressed that only President Ruto could influence whether the motion reaches Parliament.
The Senator highlighted the Mt Kenya region’s overwhelming support for President Ruto. He argued that any move to impeach Gachagua would be seen as a breach of trust. “This is the only question we are asking the President humbly because he is the only one who can bring the motion in the House,” he added. Thang’wa urged the President to think about the political impact of such a decision.
Meanwhile, Deputy President Gachagua warned President Ruto against supporting the impeachment plans. He reminded the President to keep his promise of protecting his deputy from humiliation.
Gachagua added that failing to uphold this promise would undermine trust in the President’s leadership. He noted that President Ruto greatly benefited from Mt Kenya’s support in the 2022 elections.
