Nyandarua Senator John Methu has been appointed as the Secretary General of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), marking a key leadership change as the party intensifies its preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The appointment was confirmed on Monday, May 25, by DCP party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a press briefing, where he announced that Methu’s name had already been submitted to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties for formal processing.
Gachagua stated that although the registration process is still underway, Methu will immediately begin serving as Secretary General-designate and will act as the party’s official spokesperson on all matters.
“Methu will start acting today as Secretary General-designate and be the spokesperson of DCP on all matters starting today. In the fullness of time, his name will be forwarded to the registrar of political parties so that he is registered as the duly appointed SG of DCP,” Gachagua said.
He further noted that the party’s legal team is reviewing possible legal implications arising from the Senator’s transition, given that he was elected to the Senate on a UDA ticket.
Gachagua added that Senator Methu’s appointment reflects his loyalty to the party and his growing influence within its leadership structure.
The party also assigned Methu an immediate political task, directing him to work alongside Kipipiri Member of Parliament Wanjiku Muhia and other leaders to mobilise support ahead of the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election.
During the briefing, Gachagua also revealed that the party has recorded significant membership growth, claiming that over 4.5 million Kenyans have already registered under DCP.
“We have so far registered 4,576,345 persons who have registered as members of the party,” he said, while alleging that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) was creating challenges in facilitating smooth transfer of members from other political parties.
He further claimed that thousands of Kenyans have expressed interest in contesting various elective seats under the DCP banner, signalling what he described as growing national support for the party.
According to the figures shared, the party has attracted 34 gubernatorial aspirants, 98 senatorial hopefuls, 765 parliamentary and Woman Representative aspirants, and 11,564 individuals seeking Member of County Assembly positions.
Gachagua also set an ambitious target for the new Secretary General, instructing Methu to spearhead efforts to register at least 10 million members before the 2027 polls.
The appointment of Senator Methu is seen as part of a broader restructuring within the party as it seeks to strengthen its grassroots presence and position itself as a major political force in the next electoral cycle.
Political observers note that the move could also trigger legal and political implications, given the requirements for elected leaders who switch party affiliation before the end of their term.
